Happy New Year.
Cheers to another year’s highs and lows (because the highs wouldn’t be highs without the lows) and all of the moments in between.
Cheers also to clean slates, new beginnings and crazy dreams.
In this new year, I will try.
I will try.
I will try to stop micromanaging my children, my decisions and my days.
I will try to eat good food that feeds my body (kale) and my heart (jellybeans).
I will try to read good books that feed my mind (nonfiction) and my heart (young adult fiction).
I will try to ingest better media to gain a softer and healthier perspective. But I will also try not to feel guilty about a little bad TV and celebrity gossip.
I will try to drink more water. But I will also try not to feel guilty about drinking coffee and diet coke, because I will try to drink more water.
I will try to put away my phone. Especially when I am in the company of people I love.
I will try to tell the people I love how much I love them.
I will try to show the people I love how much I love them.
I will try to refrain from using curse words and chewing gum. Both are nasty habits.
I will try to stop going to sleep at night thinking I could be a better parent and instead give myself a little grace.
I will try to celebrate the small victories.
I will try to learn from (and maybe even laugh at) the non-victories.
I will try the mantra I’m doing the best I can whenever I feel inadequate.
I will try for a little less distraction and a little more quiet.
I will try to respect and appreciate my gifts.
I will try to pay it forward with simple acts of consideration.
I will try.
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
